Not long ago, the Georgia State Legislature considered a bill that would have forced women who had miscarriages to prove there was "no human involvement whatsoever" in the miscarriage, with execution being one of the possible punishments for failing to prove it. This bill didn't pass the last time, but don't believe for a second that the misogynists behind it are giving up.
A bill that's almost as harsh has already become law in Utah, where someone who suffers a miscarriage can be charged with homicide.
[Wait, Utah? Isn't that one of those states west of the Rockies that are supposedly being prevented from enacting pro-choice, marriage equality, and universal healthcare laws by the nasty, ignorant Southerners? Hmm, maybe the great, enlightened American Union isn't destined to be a progressive paradise. Who would've thought?]
Oh, BTW, Republicans in the US House of Representatives just passed bill that would give medical practitioners the right to allow a pregnant woman who needs emergency care to die rather than risk ending the pregnancy. "But wait," you might be thinking, "wouldn't she lose the baby anyway if she, you know, dies?" True-- Generally, if the pregnancy is far enough along that there's a decent chance of the baby surviving outside the uterus, the emergency personnel will just take the baby out early. It's not as if a uterus magically keeps functioning for a couple of months after the rest of the body is dead. This isn't about "saving unborn babies," no matter what the propaganda says. It's about enshrining in law the principle that having a uterus makes someone worthless as anything other than incubators. If the incubator's contents are doomed, the incubator itself is not worth saving-- why should doctors waste their time?
