So . . . y'all probably noticed some sudden changes in my LJ and DW recently, as well as a complete lack of commentary on the sequel to the series for which I had the most icons and produced the most fic, followed by multiple posts about a game fandom I didn't write much about before. Cut for stuff that people who haven't had me friended since the early days probably won't find interesting )

I got paid last weekend, so I splurged on beads. Today I made two bracelets, Clove and Hama. This is my first finished ATLA bracelet! I was looking for beads for a different character and I found these glass beads with a wavy pattern in aqua and just a tiny smudge of red like a drop of blood in each bead-- perfect! So if you should need a villain-inspired bracelet for some reason, I can hook you up, possibly with "She is what her society made her! Everybody gets that with male characters! Why do so the so many of the same people have to be so hateful about the evil ladies?" rant included.

I'm still thinking about how to do the Rue bracelet. I don't have enough of the flowered beads to fill up the string, and the leaf-shaped beads have their holes placed in such a way that they lie with the flat side of the leaf against the next bead in line, which makes them stack pretty thin. I have enough of them to double up, but I have my doubts about how that looks aesthetically. I'm thinking about using the colorless plastic spacer beads that came with the leaf beads. Those are narrow and colorless, though, so I'm not sure I can thread them without giving myself a headache. Maybe the little wooden beads that came with my pack of sea shells will do the trick; they'd certainly be easier to work with.

WTF BEADS!

I seem to have taken up fan beading today. Some of you (okay, maybe all of you) are wondering what I mean by fan beading. I mean I am making jewelry with bead patterns inspired by fictional characters. I'm planning on making fan bracelets inspired by all of the major female characters in ATLA and all the female Hunger Games tributes who got at least a sliver of characterization. I just finished my Joanna Mason bracelet (actually, I might redo this one later-- I love how the beads look together, but I don't think I tied the ends right), and I bought a bunch of drilled seashells and smooth glass beads in blues and greens which I'm declaring a Water Tribe/District 4 starter kit.

So I have a practical question. I like string better than wire for jewelry in general, but when I make my Wiress bracelet, I'll definitely want to use a metal wire. I might possibly use wire for the Toph bracelet too, but the rest will be string. I don't want to buy wire-cutters for just one or two bracelets. I have two very good friends who also made bead jewelry, but neither of them lives close to me now. I'm not sure how socially normal it is to ask a co-worker or casual acquaintance if they have wire-cutters and would let me borrow them. How would I bring that up?

Some new Legend of Korra snippets are out, and two of them include what I am 99% sure is Old Lady!Katara! Check it out: The awesomeness is here. Yeah I know there's some firebending too, but KATARA!

Also, I just have to point out how practical Korra's clothes look and efficient her fighting style looks. From what little I've seen, I'm getting the idea that Korra is a real no-nonsense, self-possessed kind of character.

During my recent travels, I observed and thought a lot about how commercial air travel is pretty much awful for anyone who can't walk longish distances and/or who needs to carry take large items wherever they go. While I was away, I also got to get a much more up-close, on-the-ground look at how difficult it is to get a person with mobility issues and the necessary equipment into a very typically-built car. Naturally, because I am a huge nerd, I later connected this to ATLA.

Basically, I am now really curious about the future development of transportation technology in the avatarverse. Considering who is inventing a lot of the early examples, it makes sense for the field to develop in such a way that future transportation options would, on the whole, be much more accessible to people who can't go any part of the way on foot-- certainly as passengers and probably as drivers/pilots too. I'm wondering what that's going to look like later on. Wide doorways and places to secure wheelchairs would be standard on mass transportation from the very beginning. I imagine a lot of vehicles that are operated with hands only-- maybe the concept of controlling your speed with pedals wouldn't even be a thing that people consider for a century or two. Would cars resembling the ones that could easily be mistaken for the dominant lifeform in the US-- even exist?

I haven't been posting a lot lately because I've been busy preparing for my trip to visit my mother. I'm leaving Wednesday and coming back the following Wednesday. I'm proud of myself for managing to get everything I need into one suitcase. My right shoulder is injured, so I don't want to have to handle a lot of luggage. I've got one wheeled suitcase and one personal item which shouldn't be too heavy to tuck under my left arm, and I'm leaving it at that. My mom and my favorite aunt are going to meet me at the airport. ^_^ I've been downloading songs to listen to on the plane, since I can't read there due to airsickness.

Also, Kansan Entrails/Surrealist Dreamer is back in town for a short time, so I'm trying to spend as much time with her as I can before we both have to leave. <3 She made some cute presents for me, which really cheered me up after a rough patch last week.

Oh, and now I know how it feels to look at something through real shipper goggles instead of the half-assed shipper goggles I've apparently been using. KE showed me the ATLA comic she bought, and I was made ridiculously happy by a panel in which Haru and Teo were next to each other-- not doing anything overtly ship-teasing, just being in proximity. *facepalm* Some fans get excited over every little scrap of "it's practically canon if you squint!" when they're young and then grow out of it. I'm becoming a total sap in my old age.

Back when The Legend of Korra was announced, some people in Avatar fandom complained because they didn't want a new series with new characters and instead wanted the creators to make another series about the original ATLA cast. Recently, Dark Horse announced that it will publish an ATLA comic that will include 70 pages of new material about the original cast. Now people are complaining about this because they don't want more of the same character but instead want the team that's responsible for the comic to do something totally different. *sigh* How in the world is this a problem? Those who want new characters can watch the new show, and those who don't want them can refrain from watching it. Those who want more of the same characters can read the comic, and those who don't want more can refuse to read it. Those who want neither can abstain from both, and those who want both can get both.

At least there doesn't seem to be the same level of outrage as there is in DC fandom about the Young Justice TV show or in HP fandom about supplementary books that were produced for charity or the extra details JKR has released in interviews or via her website. I hope it stays that way.

Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Setting: modernish college AU don'tjudgeme!
Pairings: Teo and Haru, Katara and Aang, Sokka and Suki, and . . . that's about it, which is a surprisingly low ship count for collegeverse
Note: Kansan Entrails/Surrealist Dreamer made a holiday request for ATLA characters living in an AU where they attend university and celebrate Halloween. More specifically, the request included Teru,a Halloween party, and last minute costumes.
Warnings: glitter and fake blood
Word count: 1,660

Like some of my friends, I'm posting female character icons in response to the flowchart of fail.

Awesome ladies incoming! )

In comments to my previous post about Katara on Dreawidth, a friend suggested I do a post about Azula. So I'm going to expand on what I said in comments there.

Discussion of second and third season events under the cut )

My journal looks distressingly bare of content, so I'm reposting yesterday's LJ post here. Besides, there's no such thing as too much Katara.

Lately I've been running into more anti-Katara stupidity on the internet than usual, so I felt the not-entirely-rational need to post about how much I love a fictional character who just might be my favorite cartoon character of all time. I really like how her character developed throughout the series, and I think the writing behind her got better and better as the series went on. I especially love her in the third season-- there, I said it! Blasphemy, I know.

Specific events from third season mentioned below the cut )

So, yeah, I ADORE Katara, even-- hell, especially as she is written later in the series.
