A perfect illustration of my point
Apr. 18th, 2011 04:47 pmYou know how I sometimes say that adaptations for TV or movies are usually more sexist than the texts they're based on? Well, it looks like HBO made A Game of Thrones even more filled with rape and objectification of female characters than the original: Trigger for discussion of fictional rape and other abuse. The thread at Shakesville has some detailed discussion of sexually disturbing scenes that were added or changed to make them more blatantly abusive(!), so it's not for everyone. But the thread also contains discussion about how totally Not On it is when fans claim that a FANTASY series needs frequent occurrences of rape to be "gritty and realistic" because "that's how it would have happened" or "that's what the world was like back then" when there were zombies and telepathic wolves.
