gryphonseggI can feel somewhat removed from this despicable douchebaggery. For the linkphobic, one of the bigger and more notoriously wanky fansites is entering a contest to win money to pay their server costs. Most of the non-profits they're competing with are actual charities.
Here's the deal: Pepsi is awarding grants to non-profits. At this site , people can read about the applicants and vote for which ones get grants. Once you sign up, you can cast ten votes a day. Fiction Alley ("Update our fic site/system and get new servers so we can stay online") is competing against, among others, Skip Program ("Develop & support sports programs for children diagnosed with autism"), Creekside Cares ("Help fund a weekly backpack (food) program for elementary students"-- backpack programs give children from poor families food to take home over the weekend), Kings Highway Cat Rescue ("Provide vet care and shelter to 64 cats rescued from an animal hoarder"), and Spokane Community Warehouse ("Supply a bed for every head in Spokane, WA for homeless people"). So, yeah . . . The one good thing about this is that it's motivated people who had been unaware of the project to go and vote for other, more worthy projects. Seriously, reading about some of these applicants, particularly the ones who want to use the money to help hospitalized children, made me cry.
